I just came back from the cinema watching James Cameron’s AVATAR in 3D. I must say I was a bit sceptical.
I’m overwhelmed by all the visual effects and the great film. If you are going to see one film this year or the next one, see Avatar in 3D. Great experience. If Avatar doesn’t win the academy award for best vfx, then i’ll be really surpriesd. Weta and he other vfx companies has taken the next step towards the future in vfx. So big thanks and congratulations to all the people that has been working on it. GREAT WORK!

“The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that 15 films have been selected as semifinalists for Achievement in Visual Effects for the 82nd Academy Awards®.
In early January the Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee will narrow this list to seven films, which will compete in the “Bake-Off”, after which three films will be nominated. Congratulations to all the selected films, 2009 has sure been a memorable year in visual effects.

– Disney’s A Christmas Carol
– District 9
– G-Force

In early January, the members of the Academy’s Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee, who selected the semifinalists, will narrow the list to seven.
All members of the Visual Effects Branch will be invited to view 15-minute excerpts from each of the seven shortlisted films on Thursday, January 21. Following the screenings, the members will vote to nominate three films for final Oscar consideration.
The 82nd Academy Awards nominations will be announced on Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.”
Imagine engine in Vancouver did a great job on Neill Blomkamps “District 9“, one of the them was Jesper Kjölsrud from Gävle. His role on “District 9” was Supporting Visual Effects Sequence Supervisor. Great work Jesper!

Efter att ha farit fram och tillbaka i några år mellan Sverige och Nya Zeeland, så är nu Torbjörn tillbaka på Weta sedan 4 veckor där han jobbat med avslutningen av Avatar. I Sverige har Torbjön jobbat mestadels som VFX Supervisor på långfilmer som ARN, Män som hatar kvinnor och Kenny Begins mm.
