Alfonso Cuaron’s masterpiece Gravity was one of last year’s great movie experiences. The film has won a number of awards for visual effects, sound, cinematography and art direction, and took home seven of the ten Academy Awards it was nominated for including best director, best visual effects and best cinematography. Gravity has set new standards for visual effects and how close collaboration between director, producer, cinematographer and VFX will effect future film productions.
Digital Storytelling is back and we are arranging a two hour Masterclass on the making of Gravity with Theodor Groeneboom, Lead Compositor at Framestore CFC. Theodor won the Visual Effect Society (VES) Award for Outstanding Compositing in a Feature Motion Picture for his work on Gravity, and many remember his presentation of his work on Avatar at Digital Storytelling 2010.
The Gravity Masterclass is designed primarily for film and VFX professionals, but the more than average film enthusiast will enjoy looking behind the scenes to see how these cutting edge visual effects were created.
The presentation will give detailed insight into the entire film production process from script and pre-production through shooting and post production. As as Sequence Lead Compositor and On-set Technical Director, Theodor worked closely with both Director Alfonso Cuaron and Cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki on the VFX sequences.
Key takeaways:
- Insights into the close collaboration between the director, DOP and the VFX team on a visual effects heavy feature film
- How and why the lines between pre-production and post-production are becoming increasingly blurred in film production
- How art and science was combined to create the images seen on-screen in Gravity

Read more below..
The vision is to create an opportunity for Technical Directors and high end CG artists to meet face to face, exchange know-how, discuss problems, evaluate possible solutions and optimize ways of working. In short… to learn from each others’ experiences.
We finance across borders. We produce across borders. We work across borders. We even distribute across borders. Now it is time to plan and prepare pipelines across borders!
The Nordic TD Forum will open up unique network opportunities for TDs and CG artists and studios throughout the Nordic region. It will be the optimal place to introduce new talent, pitch projects and discuss problems. It will gather the top talents within the Nordic CG industry and reveal valuable insight knowledge of workflows.
The 5 Nordic countries will take turns hosting the annual event of the forum.
2008 took place at ITU in Copenhagen, Denmark.
2009 took place in Helsinki, Finland.
Perfectly timed to take place between two major conferences: Siggraph and FMX
