Award season rolls along with the release of the Long List for Special Visual Effects from the British Academy Film Awards.

Over 6000 members of the Academy vote in three rounds to decide the winners of the Orange British Academy Film Awards and the Long List is the result of Round One of voting. With 220 films entered this year, this first round reduces the entered films down to fifteen in each category. Round Two voting will reduce these fifteen contenders down to the five nominations in each category.

Lots of swedes involved – 15 films selected for Visual Effects Oscar

The “semi-finalist” list for Achievement in VFX was released yesterday. These are the films that I know that Swedes has been involved in:
– Angels & Demons
– Avatar
– District 9

“The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that 15 films have been selected as semifinalists for Achievement in Visual Effects for the 82nd Academy Awards®.

In early January the Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee will narrow this list to seven films, which will compete in the “Bake-Off”, after which three films will be nominated. Congratulations to all the selected films, 2009 has sure been a memorable year in visual effects.

The 15 eligible films are listed below in alphabetical order:

– Angels & Demons
– Avatar
– Coraline
– Disney’s A Christmas Carol
– District 9
– G-Force
– G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
– Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
– Sherlock Holmes
– Star Trek
– Terminator Salvation
– Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
– 2012
– Watchmen
– Where the Wild Things Are

In early January, the members of the Academy’s Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee, who selected the semifinalists, will narrow the list to seven.

All members of the Visual Effects Branch will be invited to view 15-minute excerpts from each of the seven shortlisted films on Thursday, January 21. Following the screenings, the members will vote to nominate three films for final Oscar consideration.

The 82nd Academy Awards nominations will be announced on Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.”

French roast – Short listed for Academy Award!

Well this short film called French Roast has no connection that i know off to VFX Sverige. Never the less it’s great work and now one of the ten films shortlisted for an Academy Award ! Created by Fabrice O Joubert.
